benched

Just got back from a horribly painful visit to the foot doctor. Physically and emotionally.

I've watched many of my blog buddies suffer so much from pain issues and now it's my turn. It's amazing to me how much living with pain (even in a small area) can affect your whole being.

So after the agonizing cortisone shot in my peroneal tendon he said "there's no way you are walking 60 miles". I left in tears and the whole waiting room probably got a little scared of what goes on back there!

I'm so so so so bummed. I've been preparing for this walk for almost a year.

My plan is to walk a few miles each of the days. He said six but I didn't ask if that was per day or total. The rest of the day I'm hoping I can catch a ride with some crew member friends of mine and just cheer people on.  I've ALMOST raised all my money and it still goes to a GREAT cause but I'm an overachiever and this is a big blow.

If this shot doesn't work it's on to surgery. I'm hoping and praying it works so I can get back to my active lifestyle I miss SO much. I've packed on a few pounds again because I can't do much.

As we were leaving the building, we walked right by the gym at the hospital where my husband works so we stopped and added me to his membership. I'll have access to the pool again and I plan on swimming out my frustrations.

I started this blog the day I first started swimming there. So much has happened since and funnily enough, end up back where I started. Later today I have my first session with "the food guru" as I'm calling her. It's going to be really difficult to get through all of this but I haven't lost my optimism...so at least there's that!

  1. I can't imagine how you're feeling! I had a foot and groin injury in the past, but both healed after about a month and just those few weeks were tough. I hope the shot works for you. Try and enjoy the swimming :)

  2. I'm sorry you are in such great pain. I really hope you find relief in your treatment! I know what you mean about how something small can just throw off your entire being. I hate being in pain.

Swimming is a wonderful idea! It's a great whole body exercise with little impact on your joints!

    Good luck with everything.

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about the pain--I wish I could help. Swimming sounds wonderful and I'm sure you'll feel better when you've been able to spend some time in the water. XO

  4. Aw Tina, I'm so sorry. Wish I could give you a big hug...I know how disheartening this is for you. But hang in there - one way or another, you're going to get better and then, look OUT world!!!

  5. Boooo. Sorry for the setback, but glad you're got a moving-forward plan (even if it involves my nemesis... SWIMMING). Don't let it get you down, Tina.

  6. Swimming is a great alternative! Roll a golf ball under your foot for 10 minutes twice a day, it has really helped me.

  7. I have also recently been benched for injuries so I understand your frustrations. Try to stay positive and look at this as a bump in the road. Things will look up soon.

  9. So very very sorry Tina! But you know, there's a mind-body connection so try to concentrate on anything that you CAN do and know that this too shall pass.

  10. I broke my foot in June. Crutches for 6 weeks then surgery then another 8 weeks of recovery. All I can say is that during an injury you really get a chance to see what you are made of. Don't worry that no one else (family)truly understands how bad your life stinks when recovering from an injury. Just roll with it the best you can. Laird Hamilton (the famous big wave surfer) said that he has broken so many bones and had so many injuries that he now has a process for dealing with injury. This kind of helped me cope. The psychological aspects of my injury were way harder than the actual physical part. But a triathlete friend who had shattered his femur told me remember, "You always come back stronger...always." I didn't know what he meant until now that I am back at it. Good luck!
