How yoga is like gastric bypass...only more expensive

It's been about 6 months now since I started going to my hot yoga classes and y'all know how much I love it but there's an interesting thing happening with my eating patterns that I'm just starting to notice.

Because the room is 110 - 115 degrees and the class is such an intense workout, it's something I have to really prepare for. One of the instructors said that the day before the class is just as important as the day of. I'm always mindful of what I'm eating and drinking the day before and especially the day of. If I eat like crap I will throw up. Simple as that. Kinda like a gastric bypass.

I'm trying to figure if adding another day of class is worth it but it might be a band-aid on the real problem which is putting myself in that frame of mind EVERY DAY. I don't know where that desire to treat my body well goes on the other days. I'm still not getting enough cardio and even though I'd rather do yoga, I know I need to mix it up.

I heard that weird looking doctor say to one of the contestants on the Biggest Loser that she would have to work out 90 minutes a day, six days a week for the rest of her life to keep from gaining her weight back. That's what I did back when I lost 100 pounds. That's what it takes. I HAVE to get back there.

  1. I love this. I totally understand.

I'm at the point where I don't want to eat unhealthy/fatty/high-calorie foods because it means I have to work out more than I'm already doing (and I despise working out). I think: "Wait...do I want to eat this? Really?! Because it means I need to add more time into the cardio walk or more rotations into the Pilates." Then, I just go "Ahh...hellz no!"

The more I'm putting into this, the less I'm wanting to eat. It's cool. I'm finally showing through actions that I want to be thin/fit more than I want that cupcake or that pastry. It's really neat!!!

  2. I have to be very careful about what and when I eat around my workouts also... I push myself pretty hard and NEED the fuel but have gotten queasy more than a few times. funny how to relate it to gastric...made me laugh. I DO eat better when I workout.

  3. I don't think you need to kick yourself too much for not having that Every Day outlook. I mean, the point is that most of us don't have the daily motivation by itself to maintain that kind of healthy living--which is exactly the reason why we create support systems to motivate us. If you need Hot Yoga several times a week to keep yourself in that mind set, maybe it it worth it (but don't feel bad about that). Personally, I try to get 30 to 60 min in at the gym every day, mostly because it keeps my in a fitness mind set. I know if I eat that doughnut, then I'll feel like crap when I try to go workout later.

  6. New Reader...
I can identify with most of your struggles. I am having a horrible time getting motivated this month, this week, this year. Keep at it. Jo
