Recovery

Wow what a week this has been!

Not only did I have an 8 pound loss, today is the 7th day in a row I was in a gym.

Yesterday I survived my first Body Pump class. It was very intimidating because it was at a different Y and I hadn't done it in 10 years but I sucked it up and went. There were several people waiting to get in the room and I sat down next to a really cute skinny girl with an AMAZING butt. I wasn't going to talk to anyone and then I noticed she had a tattoo so I thought she might be "cool". (Don't you love the profiling going on in my head?) I asked her if she came to this class often and I realized right away she was a totally sweet girl. I was able to get the low down on which classes were the most crowded, best instructors etc. I was so thankful for her and I look forward to seeing her next week. I took it really easy on the weight but was already feeling it during the warm up which worried me until I realized everyone else was too! I was truly exhausted when I got home and took a nap which is something I rarely do.

Today was my official rest day but I woke up really sore and quickly realized if I didn't do some moving it was going to get much worse. I couldn't lift my coffee cup to my mouth! There was a very rare breeze blowing this morning so we took the dogs out and just kept going and going. Before we knew it we had done almost 3 miles, including some running. I was absolutely drenched with sweat but I embraced it and had a great time. Then I had the brilliant idea of throwing on my suit and going to jump in the pool at the Y. I did just a few easy laps, some major stretching and ended with a dip in the hot tub. It was a perfect morning with very few people there and totally relaxing.

As I sit here and type this I'm finding it difficult to move my arms. Standing up is even more difficult but at the same time it's the greatest feeling. I know I'm on my way to losing this 100 pounds for the last time.

So, all my blog friends, how do you recover from killer workouts? Any advice would be appreciated because I anticipate feeling like this a lot throughout the rest of my journey. Hope y'all had a great weekend!!

  1. Lots of protein, but also make sure you're not working the same muscle group 2 days in a row (at least that's what my trainer says). He says you should always give the muscles 2 days to repair. Apparently when you work out you "tear down" your muscle and they're rebuilt through rest (allegedly).

7 days in a row is bananas! I aspire. :)

  2. Just found your blog! Wow!!! 8 lb loss!! That's fantastic ! and I agree with Crys.. about not working same muscle group 2 days in a row. Rest is very important. But I also know the feeling that you are on fire and don't want to rest! Looking forward to following your journey :)

  3. Hey girl!!! Crys is right about the protein and not using the same muscle group 2 days in a row...my trainer actually told me 3, but you know how they all say different crap, lol. It's a secret conspiracy to keep us confused and keep charging us out the you know what! The proteins will break down into amino acids and fill in the tears in your muscles and re-build...try to eat some 30 mins after your workouts. AMAZING LOSS THIS WEEK!!! WAY TO GO ON 7 STRAIGHT DAYS IN THE GYM!!! I'm so jealous that you guys went to the Farmer's Market w/o me! Was it the one at Forest Park? That's the only one I know of....

  4. Make sure you stay hydrated. Other than that, I soak in a hot bath, take a couple of Tylenol PMs and make sure I get plenty of sleep.

Way to go on the kick-ass weight loss, Tina.

  5. Your blog is very incouraging. I have been up and down on my workout journey and hopefully this week will get back into it. Last week was not a good one for the gym. But, thank you for your posts, it encourages me to get back into things.

  6. Wow! Congrats on the 8-pound loss, and killing it at the gym!

Sometimes I find that light exercise, like going for a slow walk, helps with soreness. And really, you can never go wrong with a glass of wine. :)

  7. What a great exercise week you had!

When I'm sore, I take it easy and TRY to not workout. They say your muscles develop with you rest. But, like you, I end up always doing something. I think once you get in the exercise groove, it's hard to stop and come down off that high, even when your body's sore. But walking sounds like a good compromise :)

  8. I love your profiling...I do that, too.

For recovery, protein, protein, protein...and water. For running, I've started taking cold baths with ice dumped in - sounds awful, but it really helps my sore legs. Keep pounding the protein - have I mentioned that enough? ;)
